    Omaruru AGM Ride(s) 2012

Post by Rico1200GSA on Mon Jul 02, 2012 3:07 am

WIth the Achab trip still very fresh in our minds it might be time to start thinking of the trips to and back from the Omaruru AGM 2012.

Registration is at 10:00 on 28 July 2012 at Kashana in Omaruru with the meeting to start at 11:00.

Suggestion getting there (on time this time Twisted Evil )?

    Suggestions getting back to Windhoek?

    Both for tar and gravel......

I will scratch around a bit to see what I can come up with, only thing is that Saturday we probably have to go as straight as possible so we can all be there on time and then on Sunday back to Windhoek we can have a bit longer run Twisted Evil

Tar riders, wellllll ... unfortunately I don't think there is too many options there Crying or Very sad

Here is my first thoughts for gravel riders. Blue in, Red out. If we leave by 07:00 we should make OMA by 10:00 and include a bit of gravel. The Sunday out route might be a bit sandy, but should be OK...and will be a longer ride. Chnages? Comments?

The return trip is about 6 to 7 hours. If we leave around 08:00 in OMA we'll ber back in Whk between 14:00 and say 16:00 latest.

I would have loved to do this route to Omaruru:

But that would mean that we have to leave the latest at 6AM to be in Omaruru by 10AM, so guess Rico's suggestion would be best for being on time for the AGM

Twisted Evil I like the way you think Peter bounce

Rico I think it is very possible to make it in time, according to Roadtrip it will take us 3 hours 33 min.
(Take note that RoadTrip in general is very conservative with their times, I am sure we can look more at about 3 Hours)
All that it means is that we will just have to be punctual on the leaving part, all get together around 5:40am, Engines start at 5:58 am, leaving at 6:00 am.

We should then be able to make Omaruru at about 9:30 give or take a couple of minutes, if we plan it properly I am sure we can hook up with the guys doing the longer tar section at Wilhelmstal and do the last gravel section as one big group apart from the tar guys that will have to travel as a group on their own.

In my experience (very limited) the D1958 up to the Swakop river is a slow road - lots of bind turns, etc. Any one with bike experience on this road? Comments?

If the timing works out - i.e. every one meets up at Wilhemstal between 09:00 and 09:30, all (tar and gravel) can be in OMA latest 10:30 - cutting it a bit fine, but this way we'll have a bit of a group ride for everyone.

The Swakop gravel guys can make Wilhelmstal at the same time, the tar guys can join up in Karibib.

For the guys from the north the return trip can be combined....

Rico we need to be in Omaruru between 9:30 and 10:00. Preferably between 9:00 and 9:30 for me as I need to give Harald a hand if possible with setting up.
Registration starts at 10:00 so should be there at that time so we don't delay the AGM.

Regarding the road, yes there are parts where it is slower than usual because of blind turn and traversing through farms, I have traveled it before in both directions and it is not that bad.

The call still remains open guys, the only question is who is willing to get up early or who wants to sleep in a bit?
    Green route to Wilhelmstal = +/- 2 hrs 30 min. (152 km)
Only thing with this route is that the people wanting to this on this trip need to be able to at least travel 100 - 110 km/h (road permitting obviously as there will be sections where you will be traveling at 60 km/h)
    • Pros for this route: Possibility to see wildlife as we are nice and early, longer riding, longer gravel ride.

    • Cons for this route:Possibility to come a bit late for the AGM (with proper planning this should not happen), not suited for tar riders.

    Purple route to Wilhelmstal = +/- 1 hrs 30 min. (135 km)
    • Pros for this route: Both tar and gravel riders can ride as a group

    • Cons for this route: Shorter riding time, not preferred for gravel riders with nobly tires

So where we would have left Windhoek at 7am doing the blue route, we will have to leave Windhoek the latest at 6am if we want to do the Green route.

Wilhelmstal to Omaruru via gravel or tar is both roughly 1 hr 10 min. So if all meet up at Wilhelmstal then we can do the last leg to Omaruru as two combined groups no matter what route you choose.

That would put arrival in OMA in both cases around 09:30, all going well.

So, let's see a show of hands....

Jacques, will you mail the link to the thread to all members again?

Howzit to all! Wimpie don't tell me you are doing the tar road route. For us from the coast we really only have one option to go behind the ERONGO mountains. Problem is that I have booked from the Friday night in Omaruru. SO if you are going to be in Omaruru on the Friday night why not rather go for a early mornign ride from Omaruru to Omaruru. That way we can get the light just right and we have loads of options. Any interest from the rest of the club to join us?

I would like to join the green route, will have to get my fuel supply sorted though.

Can we organise fuel in Wilhelmstal? My max range is 160-180km. help!
